We live in a different world than those of 400 years ago.
While this may seem a trite statement, it also makes me a little sad.
When the Pilgrims arrived in America, they did not build the Gothic or Neo-Classical structures for worship they had left in the old world. They looked to a more austere and reverential worship, one that was stripped of opulence and extravagance. While on a day-to-day practical level I understand and appreciate this, it is perhaps regrettable that we do not have the same kinds of structures for grand occasions when grandness is desirable.
Can you imagine singing with the audience in St. Paul's in London? That would be a dream...
(I think everyone knows this one so no lyrics...)
