If yesterday's post was the granddaddy of all Christmas Carols, today's is surely the grandmother. The lyrics come from Isaiah 9:6. Isaiah, of course, spoke in three distinct voices: that dealing with the current events, that dealing with the millennium and the events surrounding the Second Coming, and (as in this case) the birth of the Savior at the meridian of time. Incidentally, the phrase "meridian of time" is interesting. A meridian is a divider of time into things that came before and things that came after. We are blessed to live in a world where we can look back on the prophecies of Isaiah and see them fulfilled. We are also blessed to have an assurance that as the prior prophecies have been fulfilled, so will all prophecies which have not been up to this point all be fulfilled. In that regard, this Carol may be referring to both times - when He was born in Bethlehem, and when He will come again and have the "government on His shoulder." It may also (of course) be applied to us every day, in that Christ is the Source of our peace - He is the Prince of Peace - now and forever, and each and every moment of our lives.
and the government shall be upon His shoulder;
and His name shall be called,
Wonderful,
Counsellor,
the mighty God,
the Everlasting Father,
the Prince of Peace.
Lyrics:
For unto us a child is born,
unto us a son is given,and the government shall be upon His shoulder;
and His name shall be called,
Wonderful,
Counsellor,
the mighty God,
the Everlasting Father,
the Prince of Peace.
