Si, se puede!

So, we did it!

Today is a great day for Americans, for citizens of the world, for freedom loving people everywhere! I am so proud to be American! Ah! I can't tell you the smallest part of what I feel.

I heard a woman on the radio this morning telling her son, "You can be anything you want. Even the president of the United States." It hit me because I had dreams when I was a small child of being the president of the United States. As I grew older and more cynical, I learned what it takes to get to be able to become the president, I gave up on those dreams. I am grateful that Mr. Obama did not.

When Dr. King spoke about his dream of the world where children grow up and are not judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character, he was talking about our day. Dr. King, your dream lives on!

Alright--I guess you guys did it. I wasn't for Obama, but now that it's here, I hope for the best. I really think if he can be true to all that he has promised--our country can be a better place. Time will tell. Love you!

No, Lindsey. We ALL did it. We are all Americans. And the world is a better place because of our exercising our rights. You voted. I voted. A new president is here - peacefully and hopefully. This is the strength of our country - it is greater than you and me and Obama and McCain - it is the greatness of our country as a shining beacon to the world. So while I am happy that the guy I supported won, I would be equally happy if someone else won. It's a celebration of our democracy in action.

Bambino,I just talked with Lizette in London and I feel that I have to write to you. She tells me about the happiness of the people over there, people on the streets, on the "tube", at her work, congratulating her, not because we have had an election, they also have elections in Europe, but because Barack Obama has been elected the new US president, people at her office, very happy for her, for America, for the world, having a party, celebrating with champagne this historical hour. A phrase is repeated there: "America has redeemed itself", you may say: Those liberal Europeans! But I think that would be wrong, for me Obama's victory is not the victory of a black man, nor the victory of a political party or a political idea, it is more than that. It is the victory of Truth over lies, Goodness over Evil, Courage over Fear, Generosity over Greed, Light over Darkness. After eight years, the Almighty has had pity on us and has sent us this providential man, not to promise us something but to ask from us our high ideals, to show us that together, as a big American family, as a big human family we can build a better world. It is our chance.
I'm sorry, this is your blog and if I want to express my ideas I should have one of my own but... I just wanted to share with you some thoughts, remembering some old conversations. Our love to your family. Peace.

Ah, Senor! I couldn't agree more. My mother in law called from Korea to make sure we voted as well... American politics are the representation of the greatest desires of us all - hope, liberty, and freedom. When America celebrates itself in this way, the world can join the party!

And I, too, am grateful to the Almighty for the peaceful way in which it all happens. Our nation is strong, our ideals are strong, and our faith is strong. We will overcome.

Baptism

Yesterday Ellie was baptized. She turned eight on January 27, 2020, and she made the decision to be baptized. I want to tell you a little bit about Ellie. I have never met a child that is quite like Ellie. She is full of life and fire and joy and light. She knows no fear and is infectious in her passion for life and for goodness and for FUN!!! Above all things, she seeks the joy and fun in life. She is also wickedly clever and funny, she’s a delight to be around and makes everyone feel so good. Because she is happy, she wants everyone else to be happy. I first met sweet Elizabeth in 2018, and on the day I met her she was not feeling well. We decided that a movie would be a fun thing for a sick little girl, so I brought one of my favorites to share with her - The Neverending Story. When I got to the house, I picked her right up. It had been a very long time since I was able to pick up a girl, and she snuggled right into my arms. Her poor sick body was warm, but I was more impressed ...

Ephesus

Paul got around. Ephesus is right on the Aegean Sea, on the coast of present-day Turkey. Yesterday he was in Galatia, which was much more towards the middle of Turkey. And when he actually wrote these letters, he was in Rome... So the man could travel. He probably walked. Today's item of interest comes from chapter one in Ephesians. Verses 18 and 19 are particularly interesting: 18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, 19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power This is not the first time Paul talks about an inheritance. In Galatians he talks about the inheritance that comes of being part of the Abrahamic Covenant. He notes that we are joint-heirs through and with Christ. In Ephesians, he uses the word "adoption" - that we are adopted as the Children of Jesus Chris...

Excommunication

My heart is heavy this morning. I read that Kate Kelly and others are being brought up on Church disciplinary action. For those who are unfamiliar with the process/proceedings of LDS Church discipline, it can be a bit mystifying. There are several levels of censure that the Church may impose. These range from a simple removal of some privileges for a short period of time to the most severe action - excommunication. When one is excommunicated, the person's membership in the Church is terminated. It is a very extreme measure, and for the faithful it can be a very difficult thing to consider. What people don't understand - what is nearly impossible for someone outside the proceedings to understand - is the amount of love felt. It's discipline. It's intended to be harsh (at times). And it's intended to be unpleasant. But it is done with love and care for the person. Since excommunication is such an extreme measure, it is really only very rarely applied. There are ...
