I recently came across this:
Sometimes with One I Love
By Walt Whitman
Sometimes with one I love I fill myself with rage for fear I
effuse unreturn’d love,
But now I think there is no unreturn’d love, the pay is
certain one way or another
(I loved a certain person ardently and my love was not
return’d,
Yet out of that I have written these songs).
Which made me think of the line from the Mamas and the Papas rendition of "Glad to Be Unhappy" -
Unrequited love is a bore (yeah)
And I've got it pretty bad.
Which reminded me of Harry Connick, Jr. singing "It Had to Be You" -
It had to be you, it had to be you
I've wandered around, finally found somebody who
Could make me be true
Could make me be blue
And, even be glad just to be sad thinkin' of you
Some others I've seen
Might never be mean
Might never be cross
Or, try to be boss
But, they wouldn't do
For nobody else gave me a thrill
With all your faults, I love you still
It had to be you, wonderful you
It had to be you
'Cause nobody else gave me a thrill
With all your faults, I love you still now
And it had to be you, it just had to be you
It had to be you
And I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who feels this way.
