Sleeping Bag

So, I recently bought a truck camper (more on that later). In the truck camper, there were several sleeping bags which I asked the guy if he wanted to keep them, but he didn't. There was also a bunch of other swag in the camper that the guy seemed all too happy to be rid of - things like silverware and flashlights and other camping gear. I'm in the gradual process of cleaning the thing out, and there are some other, more major projects that need to be done, but I'm starting out with the bedding, and the sleeping bags were a problem.

They'd sat in the sunlight for who knows how long, and the one got pretty damaged:


I'm not entirely sure how that happens - it almost looks like it had melted. The fabric, which I'm guessing is either nylon or polyester, was crumbly and flaky. This is what it looked like last night after I'd washed it but before I began my patch job. The sleeping bag is a pretty good quality one, for an inexpensive-tier bag - good sturdy zipper, nice thick bat, and fairly good construction overall. So I wanted to save it, if I could.

Enter the solution:


I had this old pair of jeans in my closet. I just cut out the left hip side and whip stitched it on. It's not the cleanest job, and it lacks the quilting. But I think it's a cheap and easy solution for repairing the old bag. Plus, leaving the pockets in like this is kind of fun. :)

Anyway, fun little project! I'm going to use the rest of the leg to add a patch to the other sleeping bag. That one - the green one you see in the background - is a relatively cheap bag, thin and wimpy. But it will save us having to buy a new bag, and I've got the rest of the pants leg anyway...

2020 - A retrospective

 There will no doubt be many retrospectives written about the year that was 2020. It was a tough year for most, a good year for many, and generally speaking a very interesting year. Which reminds me of the the old curse - may you live in interesting times. Because, you see - interesting does not always mean good. It does not mean better. It does not mean happy. Is this thing still on?

 Does anyone even blog anymore? I remember when it first got started and everyone was having a blog. I like writing, and I do a lot of it in my professional life, but not everything makes it onto this blog, which is where a lot of my personal thoughts come out. I put more into Facebook lately, too, because it's a little easier. But there's something to be said for this long-form writing exercise, and I think I will continue here periodically. You don't mind, do you? Well, in my last post I wrote about how difficult things were for me at the time. That changed in July when I finally got a job working for the State of Utah. I was the program manager for the moderate income housing database program, and that meant I worked from home a lot but also went in to Salt Lake when needed, mostly on the train.
