Helaman, the father of Nephi and Lehi, recounts in chapter 5 of the Book of Helaman the reasons why he named them this way...
"...this I have done that when you remember your names ye may remember them; and when ye remember them ye may remember their works; and when ye remember their works ye may know how that it is said, and also written, that they were good. Therefore, my sons, I would that ye should do that which is good, that it may be said of you, and also written, even as it has been said and written of them."
Ammon is my son. He has a great name to live up to.
My name is Fredrick William Cobabe, III. I also have a great name to live up to. I hope I am worthy to bear the name that has become associated with so much goodness.
Incidentally, it is common for people in Mexico or of other Mexican heritage to name their sons after great people. That's why Jesus is a common name in Mexico: there's truly no one greater than the Savior. As nearly as I can determine they do this in deference to the same idea mentioned in the scriptures above - they want their children to emulate the actions and characteristics of their namesakes, while bringing honor to the name because of their own righteous works.
