That great and abominable church

What would you do for a dollar? For a million dollars? For a comfortable and convenient lifestyle?

What if you could do it all in the name of God? In the name of Him who gave everything for peace and lived His life in poverty? What would you do?

Would you say you had been called by God Himself to bring a message of prosperity?

Would you say that you could forgive sins if the donation plate is full?

Would you say that the work suffers because people are not paying enough tithing?

Would you preach peace and love in a time when you should be preaching repentance and fear of the Lord, all in the name of receiving more money - in fear of your potential loss of income?

Would you adapt your sermons to accommodate those whose chosen lifestyles are expressly repugnant to the Son of Man in an effort to appeal to a wider audience?

Would you relax your morals and standards to the point where good becomes evil and evil good?

There is much good that is done by other churches around the world. I would not like to take anything away from that.

But Joseph was told that these churches have a form of Godliness but deny the power thereof. These churches do not preach revelation - either personal or prophetic. They do not preach miracles - unless it's the dramatic babbling and confusion that happens when people are overcome by the "spirit". They do not preach healings unless it is dramatic and public. They do not preach about authority or repentance unless it furthers their own ends, which is ultimately to get more money from their followers. It's just job security.

They have minted the gospel of peace and sold their birthright for a mess of pottage.

They have given that which is most sacred to those who are unworthy because of their money.

They adorn themselves with costly and beautiful apparel and do not consider the poor (Nephi also uses the phrase "grind the faces of the poor" which I think is very dramatic and accurate).

They preach that God will prosper those who pay enough into the gilt (oh, guilt indeed!) boxes of the collection plates.

They set themselves up as examples of this prosperity while glutting themselves on that very prosperity, parasite-like.

They have become the envy of those who attend their churches.

And they neglect the poor and needy.

For all of this there will be an ultimate account required.

God told Nephi that there would be a great division among the people, and that there would be two churches only, the Church of the Devil and the Church of the Firstborn. The Devil deceives the whole world and the world groans under the darkness that is foisted on it by these evil men.

Let us find a way to reach these people and bring them the true light of the gospel.

There was a very interesting blog post from another blogger (who is Catholic) about the real anti-Christian messages of some of these "mega churches." I agreed with her and I agree with you. I think this trend towards not just profitable, but wealth-generating churches is appalling.

I think it really goes back to the notion that God rewards materially, therefore if you are doing well you must be good, and if you are not doing well, you must be a bad person. Not much has changed since Job, apparently.

Baptism

Yesterday Ellie was baptized. She turned eight on January 27, 2020, and she made the decision to be baptized. I want to tell you a little bit about Ellie. I have never met a child that is quite like Ellie. She is full of life and fire and joy and light. She knows no fear and is infectious in her passion for life and for goodness and for FUN!!! Above all things, she seeks the joy and fun in life. She is also wickedly clever and funny, she’s a delight to be around and makes everyone feel so good. Because she is happy, she wants everyone else to be happy. I first met sweet Elizabeth in 2018, and on the day I met her she was not feeling well. We decided that a movie would be a fun thing for a sick little girl, so I brought one of my favorites to share with her - The Neverending Story. When I got to the house, I picked her right up. It had been a very long time since I was able to pick up a girl, and she snuggled right into my arms. Her poor sick body was warm, but I was more impressed ...

Excommunication

My heart is heavy this morning. I read that Kate Kelly and others are being brought up on Church disciplinary action. For those who are unfamiliar with the process/proceedings of LDS Church discipline, it can be a bit mystifying. There are several levels of censure that the Church may impose. These range from a simple removal of some privileges for a short period of time to the most severe action - excommunication. When one is excommunicated, the person's membership in the Church is terminated. It is a very extreme measure, and for the faithful it can be a very difficult thing to consider. What people don't understand - what is nearly impossible for someone outside the proceedings to understand - is the amount of love felt. It's discipline. It's intended to be harsh (at times). And it's intended to be unpleasant. But it is done with love and care for the person. Since excommunication is such an extreme measure, it is really only very rarely applied. There are ...

Ephesus

Paul got around. Ephesus is right on the Aegean Sea, on the coast of present-day Turkey. Yesterday he was in Galatia, which was much more towards the middle of Turkey. And when he actually wrote these letters, he was in Rome... So the man could travel. He probably walked. Today's item of interest comes from chapter one in Ephesians. Verses 18 and 19 are particularly interesting: 18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, 19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power This is not the first time Paul talks about an inheritance. In Galatians he talks about the inheritance that comes of being part of the Abrahamic Covenant. He notes that we are joint-heirs through and with Christ. In Ephesians, he uses the word "adoption" - that we are adopted as the Children of Jesus Chris...
